Chapter Seventeen

Alyra paced around the hut she shared with Ethan. She’d nearly chewed her nails down to nothing. Where was Ethan? And what was taking him so long to bring Lotari to her? She stopped next to the door. Maybe she was being too paranoid. Maybe that man just looked like Tarek’s father.

Ethan had insisted she not jump to conclusions. Even if it was Olden, he didn’t seem able to place her and probably wouldn’t. She’d changed too much since leaving Racah.

Alyra had to agree. She had changed. A lot.

She grasped the handle. “Stop being such a pixie, hiding at every little shadow you see.” Most likely, he’d forgotten they’d even met. “Just go out there and act normal.” She would find Lot and tell him they needed to return home. Or to his home.

She sighed, resting her head against the door frame. Oh, but she wished she could go home, but where was home? She was no longer sure. So long as Darnel continued to pursue her, she’d never be free to settle down and make a life for herself. No, not until he was thrown from his lofty perch in those desolate mountains. Someone had to stop him.

Maybe, instead of wandering around aimlessly, what she needed to do was to focus on finding a way to bring down her former master.

She could picture Riyah shaking his head at her. He’d tell her to stay on the path the King has laid out for her. He’d tell her to be patient and wait for the right time. But what was the right time? She hated waiting. She wanted something to happen, something to move her closer to getting what she wanted. And what she wanted most was to be left alone to live her life. Perhaps in some nice little town like Many Rivers. Somewhere she could feel part of a community.

She was tired of always hiding, of fearing what might happen if she got too close to people. What they’d think of her if they knew her past and what she could do. She was so tired of being afraid.

Her fingers tightened around the latch. She needed to leave here. This place was doing nothing to get her closer to her goal. What was Lotari thinking in coming here anyway? What did he hope to accomplish? His own clan hated humans. And it seemed humans were suspicious of his clan, too.

The sound of several pairs of boots neared her hut. Alyra backed away with a gasp, wondering if Olden had, in fact, recognized her and was coming to see for sure if she was the escaped princess. Her heart thumped so loudly, it drowned out all other sounds. She searched for a hiding spot, but the sparsely furnished room offered little shelter.

She bumped against the door to her room when the latch jiggled, and Ethan entered. Alyra’s mind reeled from her nerves, causing her to sway from lightheadedness. She grasped the frame for support.

“Hey, what’s wrong, Sis? You
